What would you do if a 15-minute fix suddenly cost you $700, or even up to $1,500?

That’s the reality when a sewer line backs up. I learned this the hard way after coming home to water in my basement and discovering the real cause wasn’t what I expected.

One weekend, I came home and noticed water on the floor of my basement. At first, I thought it was my hot water tank leaking again since I had replaced it a couple of years ago.

I checked again later, and the water was still there. After taking a closer look, I noticed my basement sink was full of water after I showered. That’s when I realized it wasn’t the water tank; it was my sewer line backing up.

I had to call a plumber, and one thing became very clear: this is not a cheap problem. When you have a sewer line clog, especially if it’s urgent, plumbers can charge anywhere from $800 to $1,500, even if the job only takes about 15 minutes.

In my case, it ended up costing around $700.

“Plumbers can charge anywhere from $800 to $1,500.”

The plumber explained that my home has cast-iron pipes. Over time, these pipes can accumulate materials like toilet paper, making it harder for everything to flow through easily.

Even though you may only be flushing toilet tissue, it doesn’t always move through the system right away. It can get stuck, build up over time, and eventually cause a clog.

What surprised me most is how long this can take. I’ve been in my home since 2020, and it took about six years for this issue to finally show up.

Here’s the tip the plumber gave me that can help you avoid this kind of expense. If you’re leaving your home for more than a few days, run hot water from your bathtub for about 15 minutes before you leave.

The reason is simple. When your home sits empty, your sewer line can dry out. If toilet paper is sitting inside the pipes, it can harden and form a thick, clogging mess. Running water helps flush everything out before that happens.

Another big lesson is to be very careful about what goes down your drains. A few simple habits can help you avoid bigger problems over time:

  • Only flush toilet tissue
  • Avoid flushing paper towels, feminine products, food, or anything else
  • Remember that these items may not cause an issue right away, but they can build up over time and lead to a serious blockage
  • Watch for warning signs like slow-flushing toilets or drains that take longer than usual to empty
  • Be mindful of hair buildup, as it can also contribute to clogs

Staying aware of these small details can make a big difference in preventing a costly sewer line issue.

Sometimes the most expensive problems come from things we don’t often think about. In this case, it was my sewer line.

Sharing this helps you avoid the same mistake and save money, and that alone makes it worth it. A little extra care now can go a long way in preventing a costly repair later.
